Ive never ever been sedated in my life for any medical procedure aside dental stuff which is local anesthesia. Also I cant eat any solid food tomorrow or any liquid that its not almost completely clear. Can only eat (drink) broth, jello, gatorade and clear juices. Im dreading this so much. My gains will go down the drain!

So you would rather be conscious as a gigantic tube is inserted into your rectum?

Nah...read its painful without it. Its kinda like the feeling when you ride a roller coaster for the first, the anxiety gets to you before riding, but once youre out its usually no big deal.

the headache after is gonna suck but being immediately put to sleep like you see in movies(does this smell like chloroform?) is pretty wicked. i was surprised how fast it was and the next moment you'll be awake again.

You'll be fine..my dad has taken one like every year.. you will be under anesthesia the whole time. Don't drive there..cause someone will have to take you back.

I've had 2. I fucking hate anaesthesia but you don't know shit. They say to count backwards from 100, say the color of the pens in their hand, whatever. That'll be the last thing you remember and to you it takes 0 time

But you'll be sloppy the rest of the day. Are they not making you drink a bunch of laxative?

Idk why I just get nervous at the thought of it and what if something bad happens or something.

why are you getting one though? u 50 years old?

Had some frequent and sometimes heavy bleeding that scared me. From the last visit it seemed like it was due to a fissure, but dr still needs to pay for her porsche. Nah, turning 32 and having an uncle that died of colon cancer (mostly due to life style habits and poor diet) makes me want to make sure that things are alright.

I have the same issue. Heavy bleeding sometimes. For me it's an internal hemorrhoid. So yours is probably something like that

You'll be out before you even know it, literally. The last thing you'll think is "hmmm, nothing is happening" and then you'll wake up several hours later, safe and sound, feeling like you took the deepest nap ever. You'll say some funny things while you recover and whoever's with you will have a laugh. That's it, that's the whole process. The worst part is drinking that barium drink and living on the toilet in prep.

Hey man, its ok to be scared, but no matter what you made the right choice. A lot of men older than us (were the same age) completely ignored such preventative procedures and a lot of them have died far too young because of it.

This is a PROTIP FOR ANYONE EVER GETTING A COLONOSCOPY:

DO NOT GET GOLYTELY or the barium drink.

SPECIFICALLY ASK for Prepo-pik or sodium picosulfate (because apparently the specific brand Prepo-pik has been discontinued but the medication is still out there).

Golyteyl is you drinking a gallon of mucus.

Prepo-pik is two 8 ounce glasses and actually doesn't taste that bad.

Yeah, straight up. Do not let some doctor stick you with old school PEG shite. There are brand name options that are much better, and at worst you're out $100 even if your insurance doesn't cover it.

Heavy bleeding and a family history? Youre doing the right thing getting checked.

There is a massive family history of bowel cancer - two aunts, my grandfather had it at various stages and it was treated, a 34 year old cousin died of it. That and generally shitty digestive systems (Ha!) so I need to get one every few years as well. The worst part really is the pico prep, that stuff is utterly vile and will make you hate the artificial citrus flavour they use.

The sedation isnt too bad - Ive got a friend who had one conscious. She was like yup, never again.

You just start counting down and suddenly youre waking up after the procedure.

First one I had was the worst - my first gastroenterologist was a bit crap. Idk if he left a whole lot of air in there or what, but I had massive shotgun blast farts and cramping for about 2 days.

The last one was great - no after effects except for needing the prep stuff to wear off.

Good luck, its a bastard of a thing to have to do, but its always best to be careful.

Typically no. The goal of general anesthesia is that the patient has no memory of the procedure. Of course outliers exist though.

Too late to change your mind now, but for what it's worth I had mine done without anesthetic and while it's uncomfortable, it doesn't hurt.

The bit that's weird you'll have to deal with anesthetic or not, finding the right spot to get rid of the excess gas. You're gonna be a bit bloated afterwards.

I have ulcerative colitis so I've had like 6 by 30.

Don't worry, I know it's nerve-racking but the procedure is no big deal at all. Just relax.

And yeah you can do popeyes right after. I always get fast food right after I get a colonoscopy.

Ive been under anesthesia multiple times. Its scary the first time when you dont know what to expect. But its over before you know it and it always just feels like you had a great nap. My doctor laughs because he tells me people are nauseous after but I always get in n out right after.

Its probably better to eat something fairly bland for your first meal - remember the pipes are going to be squeaky clean and youll have literally starved yourself. Avoid anything too greasy or potentially irritating.

So it all went down pretty good. Like everyone said anesthesia kicked in in a matter of seconds and was asleep instantaneously only to wake up "seconds later". Only thing that bothered me was all the air inside after.

Dr said she didnt find anything out of the ordinary except that my large intestine was slightly longer than usual and that it could be part of my constipation.

As for the food...well took my mom to cheescake factory since she stayed with me and I had a mushroom burger, but left half for later. All in all nowhere near as bad as I thought and guess I should do one every couple of years or so.
