I'm a member of the Cherokee Nation, though I've never used it for benefits or IHS.
I enjoy going to the tribal gatherings they have locally every few years, but I'm only 1/128th Cherokee which is near the limit (IIRC) for full membership. --- Well allons-y, Alonso! ... Copied to Clipboard!

My great grandmother on my mom's side is Native, but I don't recall which tribe. If I really wanted to join I probably would have some chance of being acknowledged as having Native blood.
But I wouldn't necessarily stake my life on it. --- take me somewhere nice "Miss, can you tell me your address? I need an address...I need an address, so we can send help." ... Copied to Clipboard!

I think different tribes have different blood percentage requirements. The Cherokees have probably the most lenient, but you do have to definitively prove it with documents.
My father actually traced our lineage all the way back to the Dawes Act in 1887. --- Well allons-y, Alonso! ... Copied to Clipboard!

i'm supposed to be related to several powhatan tribes through a couple different branches but without genetic testing you'd never be able to tell. some loon in my family has a family tree showing the connection but i've seen it maybe once and never thought about it since.

The Dawes Roll was a form of paper genocide. Many Native Americans and Indians were reclassified as "colored" which was a catch all term for all non white people. Many were jailed or threatened with jail for rightly claiming their tribal heritage
On the other hand many Europeans were able to buy their way into tribal heritage. This is where the term $5 indian comes from. Many European Americans felt entitled to the tribal benefits and reparations that tribe members received so some gamed their way into the tribal system on the Dawes roll Source: https://youtu.be/3hr4gECoYZM ... Many were jailed or threatened with jail for rightly claiming their tribal heritage This brings up an adjacent issue of Native Americans assuming Spanish last names and identities to avoid bounties on indians and prejudice which was particularly common in the Southwest. This is where terms like Chicano, Mestizo and even Mulatto come from. I have both Blackfoot and Apache heritage but I grew up in the city and am not registered with a tribe. --- "He busted in, blessed be the Lord Who believe any mess they read up on a message board" -MF DOOM ... I have a membership card from the Innu tribes. They are part of the algonquin ethnic group. I have no idea which of my ancestor is Native tough, I gave them my family tree and they just sent me this card without further detail.
