i wouldn't worry too much about a character's name, that sounds a bit like over-writing

Depends.

i mean i guess with contemporary fiction if you are writing a character that is foreign to your experience you should pay attention to the name, i guess.

It works for some characters while is superfluous for other characters.
A character's name shouldn't feel so contrived it distracts the reader from the story they are trying to tell. --- "He busted in, blessed be the Lord Who believe any mess they read up on a message board" -MF DOOM ... Copied to Clipboard!
