Sonic 2 ends with Sonic in the sky, on Tail's biplane; Sonic 3 starts with the biplane and Sonic swooping down over the ocean, and arriving at the floating island (even if it isn't floating).

I assume it's meant to be straight after, but I was never sure. Why is life so confusing?
