China and Russia were both backwater agrarian countries before becoming communist, and they became industrial powers with major urban centers while they were communist (tbf i'm not as sure of this when it comes to China. but it's definitely true for Russia.), even if they're not or mostly not communist anymore. I say this and fully accept that the means were brutal and tragic: I wouldn't want something like that to happen again even if it meant a great leap forward, so to say.

China got to where they are today by stealing IP from capitalist companies. USSR just plain fucked themselves and dissolved the country.

i'm not talking about contemporary history... i'm just talking about a level of industrial capacity and modernization. things like railways and factories, a major financial or technological sector; things that are basically requirements for powerful countries to get to the point of where they are today. historically that generally seem to require either a massive sacrifice of human capital (gulags, purges, slavery, colonization) or just being in the same vicinity as wealthy countries so you can benefit from proximate trading wealth (in some ways this accounts for countries like Japan, Taiwan, South Korea- that was largely dependent on American intervention, iirc).

I didn't say there shouldn't be regulations. Just that the notion of capitalism making people poor is idiotic because that's what you start off with. Some people are born lucky into wealth, but that wealth wasn't from you.

there is no alternative to capitalism. capital is a fundamental substratum of human existence. we are not sufficiently advanced as a species to do away with capital; we are too advanced as a species to do away with capital.

even communism deal in capital. so does anarchism. it's always been around in the same way globalism has been around.

i know you're refering to liberal economics but yea, minor nitpick.

There's a difference between what you're talking about and unbridled, chike-the-populace capitalism as done in America.It's funny how you only have to say "that's socialism" and people jump like they've been electrocuted yet all the countries worth a damn in the world are socialist.
