i definitely hate my accent too but it's not like people won't understand me

so if you don't know how to pronounce half the words you're saying i guess you may not be fluent but if it's just you having an accent i don't think that matters lol

It is mainly accent, and stage freight.

Im better when talking to myself, than when talking to others, and the few times that i have, i was definitely legible.

I think we probably have different conditions for fluency. To me fluency would include a lot more. Like even though I can make myself understood perfectly fine, I'm lacking in a number of areas I'd almost only be able to develop if I lived in an English speaking country for a long time. Such as, better understand of dialects, local figures of speech/idioms etc, a ton of names for like flora and fauna. So for me fluency is a level above, say, proficiency, which would be a level of speaking where I still have a large vocabulary and a working understanding of the grammar.

Ahhh dig minns jag!! Det var lngesen!

Sure, if you break it down far enough the definitions of fluency can seem a bit arbitrary. But I definitely think there are aspects of a language that you don't really pick up until you really immerse yourself for a long time. And it gets really obvious when I visit a place where they speak English natively because there's this kind of ease native speakers have that I don't yet. It's really hard to explain.

I'm not really sure what those CEFR levels are, though. Your Swedish is really good for not having spoken it for ten years though! By comparison, my French that I haven't used for ten years is absolute dog shit at this point lol

thanks! yes. think of you and the NE board whenever the word pung comes to mind. (if i'm not mistaken, one refers to bitcoin-pungar in de andra nordiska sprken.) i do listen to stuff in swedish from time to time, and read a couple of books a year in swedish. if i want to read something, like a book of fiction (especially if i've already read it in english) or maybe something that doesn't require me to have master-level understanding, i like to take it in swedish or spanish to get a little something extra out of it.

i think it also helps that it and english are so alike, almost like just going about my day-to-day bolsters the same language pathways that swedish occupies. i always felt like my spanish was in another territory, perhaps like your french. i need to read more in spanish...have you been reading anything in your romance language? or anything of note in swedish or english? actually, i also wonder if you by chance have any recommendations om sverige under stormaktstiden.

cefr refers to the common european framework of reference, which helps to gauge a second or foreign language learner's ability in the study language. according to tisus at the time i took the test, c1 was sufficient to undergo tuition in swedish, although i never ended up putting that to the test.

C1:
  • Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer clauses, and recognize implicit meaning.
  • Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2:
  • Mastery or proficiency
  • Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
  • Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

I see. Sure that C2 description seems like it fits, but I'm still hesitant if I would call that fluency. But I suppose it also depends on the context.

No, I haven't really been reading anything in French for a long time now. I suppose I kind of gave up a little bit on that language. I've been picking up some Portuguese though and am planning to at some point figure out Polish, since my gf's family is from there.

About stormaktstiden... are you looking for history books or fiction? I'm not very well versed, maybe someone like @ROBANN_88 knows more (for some reason I have him pegged as a history buff). But I spoke to some Sami people about a year ago and they were talking about an interesting author who had written about the native perspective from that time. Sadly I lost the name and it bugs me because it sounded really interesting

I'm a history enthusiast.
I like it, and can probably be good at finding info when needed, but i would'nt say i'm any kind of knowldegable authority.

And now that i think about it, Stormaktstiden is a subject i know surprisingly little about beyond the basics

thanks for the reply and tagging in robann. just looking for history for now, although it would make an interesting setting for historical fiction, for sure. if you guys happen to think of any cool books, even if only about the basics, please let me know. preferably in swedish but english is ok as a last resort.

Fluency is definitely a pretty loosely-defined and hard to quantify metric, but scar youre certainly fluent at least by any colloquial sense of the word.

Anyways, just English unfortunately. But ive been learning German for nearly 3 years now and dont intend to ever stop. Danish is next after my German is fluent. Know a tiny tiny bit of Spanish
