Torrented without VPN, big mistake, can't change the past.

Comcast sent me a letter saying "Strike 3 Holdings" is requesting my information since I'm "John Doe", and I have 30 days to "quash" the request. But I read there's no point to do it as they will just get my information another way. What should I be doing right now guys? Should I wait it out until I get a settlement letter from "Strike 3 Holdings" or should I get a lawyer now? The thing is I have barely any savings, <$10000, as I've been unemployed for almost a year. I don't own anything in my name, no car or home. This is very worrying for me right now.

Apparently that was part of why the cases got tossed, if I'm understanding correctly.

If all they have is an IP then they don't have a way to conclusively prove that a specific individual is the one who did the infringement.

First rule to this kind of thing is do not respond at all. Don't acknowledge that you received the notice via email. If you confirm that you got it, they can move forward.

Good news is, generally this is a scare tactics warning and nothing will come of it. Stop downloading without a VPN, this is like robbing a bank with a tee shirt visible to cameras that has your drivers license and SSN on it.

If for whatever reason it goes further than just a scare, remove any password lock you have on your router, so you can claim a neighbor or someone else was using your unsecured connection. Delete anything of theirs you have downloaded.

I had a dumbass friend that kept downloading Game of Thrones and got like 10 notices from HBO until they finally started to pursue him, and this is how he protected himself. A VPN is worth $15 a year, they are stupidly inexpensive and you are pretty secure from issues like this in the future.

Which means the account holder is responsible. That doesn't get it tossed.

If you quash it from your internet provider so they don't tell them who you are then any way for them to get that info would most likely be illegally obtained and not admissible in court. Or you could have a lawsuit against some other company for giving out your personal info.

It's not a email, it's an UPS Air letter, that I found in my appartments mailroom. I techniquly never signed for it. Hopefully nothing come from this, but I'm very pessimistic.

Also, purchase TorGuard VPN for a year. Learned my lesson.

If this is for real ignoring it will force your ISP to give them your info at the end of 30 days. You have that amount of time to come up with a reason they shouldn't give your info away

Basically ignoring it is the opposite of what you should do if your ISP has been legitimately given a subpoena

So basically, letter, what letter? It's insanely rare for something to come of things like this, and it's usually mass downloading and redistribution are the ones that get nailed, the ones profiting from it. No one bothers with one person downloading one or two movies to watch for themselves. I know the initial first contact can be a shock, but that's the point.

Yea, but I'm reading that it's not the best idea to quash the claim. https://www.torrentlawyer.com/miami-dade-motion-to-quash/

This reminds me of a time when some law firm for Walmart sent me some kind of threatening letter saying I stole chapsticks and nail clippers (when in reality, I was stopped by Walmart security but they realized they got the wrong guy because the person who stole it in the security camera was wearing very similar clothes as me and he was also asian), and was asking for a ridiculous amount of money or else they will press charges against me. My first instinct was to call Walmart to sort this thing out, but instead I contacted my lawyer first and thank goodness I did because he essentially says that it's simply a scare tactic they do to get free money off of you. Replying or acknowledging the letter basically sets a bad precedent of them trying to mooch more money off of you and might give them the incentive to actually press charges (and go the whole court system) against you.

TL;DR just ignore and never acknowledge it. If they try to call you, don't bother picking it up. If they send more letters just shred it and throw it in the recycling bin (or fire pit... it's what I did).

Yeah but if you had to go through the whole dog and pony show then your lawyer most likely would have recommended a counter suit for besmirching your good name, false accusations, pain and suffering, etc, etc. You would have been able to get some money off them.
