None of this changes the fact you should never point a gun at something you dont intend to shoot. Yes, that is a good safety rule to live by. I do wonder though if the very real threat of such a stance, with finger on trigger, could have deterred some protesters from attacking. In the recent riots, some people were severely injured and at least one person killed when rioters attacked citizens who werent really able to protect themselves.
