He won't do that. There's no reason to.

But what would happen ultimately depend on when he does it. If he does it the week before then he change basically nothing, his name is on the ballot, millions of early votes have been submitted, etc. If he does it at like the Convention or shortly after then the GOP will have to do a quick turnaround and will probably prop up Pence. Any other GOP candidate would be a greater risk factor because they won't have the name and platform recognition that Trump have. Now he could straight up resign I guess, but that just mean that Pence basically is in charge for however many months left until Biden walks in unless the electors do something really screwy
