Reese Witherspoon admits that she had no idea what being gay was while growing up in Nashville, Tennessee.

No one spoke to me abut sexuality when I was a teenager, the 44-year-old actress revealed during a conversation with Regina King for Variety. I didnt understand what homosexuality was. My grandparents didnt explain it; my parents didnt explain it.

I had to learn [about it] from somebody I met on an audition in Los Angeles, she added.

The Oscar winner reflected on her Southern upbringing when she appeared on Chelsea Handlers show in 2006.

I grew up, obviously, in the South and there is amazing, wonderful connectivity and people are loving and communitive, Witherspoon said. But there is a tiny aspect of it, people [that] use parts of the Bible in order to express their intolerance and their hate and they manipulate it.

I learned what it was in fourth grade because my classmates kept making fun of a kid who pretended to be gay. For some reason he thought it would get people to leave him alone.

Of course. If I didn't know what gay was as a teen, I couldn't of been so homophobic and disrespectful to their community. Thank God, Im not that douchebag anymore.

I mean, I always respected people I or my family knew regardless of any preferences in anything. But I used slurs and was under the impression it made you less of a man and all that.

My mom had no idea that black people existed until she was 10. She's from a small town in Newfoundland and Newfoundland at the time was like 99.9% white.

First time she saw one it was on a train. She saw a black lady and asked her why they didn't have soap where she came from.

Luckily the woman was very understanding and explained things to her.

Theres no way she didnt know. ESPECIALLY in Knoxville.

Unless she rarely interacted with people I dont believe this for a second. People threw around the word gay and slurs so casually.
