According to the latest International Monetary Fund projections, China is set to grow just over 1% in 2020, while the U.S. economy will likely contract nearly 6% this year worse than the global 3% decline in growth.

Literally the only major country that's going to have any economic gain, and only because of their draconian style lockdowns.

Fair enough, although US is still going to do worse than other countries because of its terribad political response to COVID.

We've certainly tried.

Because they're a germaphobic country like Japan and collectivism. US is too highly individualistic for a draconian lockdown to work, especially when you got nutjobs like our President and the Republican party calling it fake news that are basically empowering conspiracy nutcracks like Alex Jones spreading misinformation. It's never going to work here in the US/

I was just saying that draconian lockdowns are NOT the best way to contain it (to counter tc's topic title).

China mostly contained it to Wuhan province, which had a huge lockdown, so travel in and out of Wuhan was shut down, and the rest of the country was mostly spared.

They took this shit seriously, both government as well as citizens, and they dealt with it appropriately.

So yeah, I mostly believe their numbers. There could be a few thousand more, where cause of death might have been attributed to some other factors, but where COVID-19 still played a part, but I don't think that differs much from other countries where people have been dying.

Numbers in South-Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc have also been very low, compared to Western Europe and the USA. I expect India, South America and Africa to have high numbers of casualties, similar or higher than the USA.
