It won't happen this year, but I'm willing to bet it becomes a major campaign issue in the way that fighting for the Supreme Court was an issue in the last election.

The make DC a state bill leaves a small district as unincorporated so that the seat of the US government is still not part of a state

the issue is the hundreds of thousands of unrepresented people in the city that has grown around these buildings

Except the Democrats want it because it would add one more representative as well as two more senators to their side.

Only way a 51st state happens is if a conservative stalwart 52nd state is made at the same time. Split Montana at the same time.

so yeah, not happening short term.

democrats best chance is to use the increased telework as a chance to move to current red states and change them purple or blue. Do that, take senate, then do what you want.

Democrats want it primarily to give 700,000 people people proper representation

trumps display of force against protesters simply because they do not have a state government protecting them is what is accelerating calls for statehood right now

Then give that land back to the surrounding states that donated it in the first place (minus the small part that needs to stay autonomous). If it's really about representation, the most common sense proposal would be restoration, not statehood.

Its, constitutionally, not that simple

its more complicated for DC to be absorbed into Maryland because Maryland would also have to vote and agree to it

DC is already its own entity with its own (non voting) representatives in Congress, so it is more practical to make that official

I don't care about what they prefer, they need to just accept the least contentious course of action that isn't simply maintaining the status quo (no voting representation beyond presidential elections). If it were simply about giving 700k residents direct representation in Congress like TheGoldenEel claimed against my earlier post, then they would also accept retrocession when statehood does not appear to be likely to happen.

It depends on whether or not they keep all three house members. If they do and get their senators then they would have 5 electoral votes.

per the constitution and states rights, the least contentious and most straightforward way to give them representation is making it its own state

NOT making it part of maryland

Should every city or county become a state, then? They want to make DC a state because it's like 90% Democrat, and for no other reason.

Admitting a state requires consent from two parties: the wannabe state and the federal goverment.

Adding to the boundaries of a state requires consent from three parties: the state, the area to be added to it, and the federal goverment.

Retrocession is not the path of least resistance or contention
