Besides always having access to it, there are intangible benefits to actually owning something.

Video games are basically screwed though because even though they still have "physical media" , they have huge installs now and may as well be digital media

Yeah there isn't really a way to own physical copies of video games anymore because of the needs for patches and a number of other issues. Though I learned my lesson after Nintendo shutdown the Virtual Console and only own physical copies of old games now. I can always resell them for as much or more than I paid and I never knew how long or if digital copies will become available again (though I am always scared about my PS1 CDs being rendered unplayable by the most minor damage). I also enjoy the cases/manuals/inserts most older games have.

I'm the same way.

We need more assets in a physical medium. Give our Games / TV Shows / Movies / Music some physicality.
Patches should only be for code and new Art Assets IMO.

TC never uses Google and drives to the library to look something up instead

You gotta grow with the times. Physical is dying, grow and adapt to the modern ages. This is coming from someone who still has a 400+ library of VHS tapes.

Are you unable to play virtual console titles after the shop goes down?

I downloaded all my games to a harddrive for the Wii, but yes, you can no longer download them and there is no record of your purchases. The Wii U and 3DS are still fine, but not known for how long. This isn't just virtual console though, it's all digital Wii purchases. Of course you could modify your console and do other potentially illegal things like that for older consoles to run digital copies, but the fact that that's the only option is just kind of sad. And as a collector it doesn't really have value to me to say I modified a console to play games. It's basically the same as saying I modded my Pokemon game to have all the Pokemon, there's no satisfaction in it to me.

Lmao physical is an inconvenience for every type of media. I have more access to movies and TV shows than I ever would have before with Hulu and Netflix alone. And with the exception of vinyl, streaming music shits all over CDs.

Nope. There is no way to redownload digitally purchased Wii games legally. Wii U and 3DS are still fine for now.

I should mention so far Sony has never done anything like that or indicated they will though. Same for Microsoft.

Once you get to a certain price difference it really doesn't matter to me.

If I gotta pay 40 bucks for a physical copy but I can get it digitally for 7, better believe I'm going digital.

That's probably the weirdest part about damn near all media in Japan. Physical is almost always cheaper. The only exceptions I can think of is for old and rare things. A brand new game will always be cheaper in physical here.

That does happen from time to time here as well.

Sometimes a company won't GAF and keep their game listed at full price basically forever on an online store.

I remember PSN had a half-off sale not long ago and I was going to pick up a game and when I looked on Amazon the physical copy was still cheaper than the half-off digital price.

No definitely nothing like that on the Wii. Always online requirement only exists for some PC games as far as I know. But for the subscription stuff like Playstation Now, Games with Gold, the NES/SNES games on Switch you have to be online (though there is some download and play offline option like Netflix has for Playstation Now anyway).

Yes it's entirely legal to download a torrent if you initially bought the product. Even an email document of purchase makes it legal. Games and media exist forever in torrents.

It was required for final fantasy on the Ouya and some other ouya games at least. A lot of my games revered to demos when the server went down,

I mean you might find it morally justifiable (I don't care one way or the other if someone did or didn't purchase something they play), but I think in most countries that would still be quite illegal.

You like paying $60 for a movie? $40 for a CD? I mean outside of games and especially books (it's insane how cheap books are) media isn't that cheap here.

I don't like that part. I like the concept of everything being sold on Physical Media.

I like US pricing for Movies / TV series.

I want everything on Physical Media to be "Cheap" and accessible to everybody.

What's funny is burning/ripping media isn't illegal in Japan so rental stores are really popular here and they sell the blank CD/DVD/Blu-Ray discs right at the counter. The rental fee actually goes to the media companies as well. It's an interesting niche.

I believe it was more like the ds version. It was way too nice to be mobile.

Anyway Im not saying the best reason to get an ouya was for emulation or that I played Mother 3 on it. Mother 3 is great though.

There's nothing wrong with digital media inherently, in fact in many ways it's better than physical media.

But so much digital media has DRM which makes it very much worse than physical media.
