Because all it does is give them justification in their beliefs.

And they'll go around their church or friend group and talk with potentially vulnerable individuals and try to paint their views with "I got attacked unfairly by someone of (race they hate). They're violent and they don't deserve equal treatment"

If you never give them any kind of ammo to "prove them right" (in their minds) then they can't go around with any "proof" to convince other people.

They are going to hold those beliefs no matter what. And people that would be convinced by such an argument are already most of the way there anyway. What you can do, which is what this woman did, is inform them of the consequences of holding those beliefs openly and using them to insult or otherwise attack people.

And I don't disagree that she deserved to be slapped or suffer (immediate) consequences.

I'm just wary of proving somebody right in their mind, even if they fully deserved their consequence
