Did they really think that would help somehow?

What, was saying black people are only worth half a white person too offensive?
Why 3/5ths? Why not 7/9ths or 83/245ths or some stupid arbitrary number like that.

The south wanted slaves counted for representatives, but didn't want them to vote.

It didn't technically classify any specific race as three fifths a person. It just says that "all other persons" (not free people or untaxed Indians) will be recorded as three fifths a person for population purposes.

Obviously we all know what it really means, and it's sad because this dumb shit was only put in the Constitution to appease Southerners in the first place.

This. They weren't trying to sidestep racism, this was just a racist middle ground the South and North met at.
