Only real smart folks don't utilize any writing utensils until they have the entire crossword completed in their mind.

Fun fact: the New York Times crossword on Election Day, 1996, had a clue: "Tomorrow's headline: '_______ elected president'". Either "Clinton" or "Bob Dole" both fit, and both worked with the other clues around it.

For example, the across clue coming off of the first letter was, "A black animal usually associated with Halloween". Could have been "cat" or "bat" off of the C in Clinton or the B in Bob Dole. All the clues around it had interchangeable ones.
