I said, "I just want to know who this guy is that he's so bad ass, that girls have tattoos of him. Is he a family member?" She just smiled and said he was a famous author. Then I told her I understood and that I felt the same way about Batman (I have Batman tattoos on one arm). Just stuff like that. Or I'll say, "So how's life. Anything new at your job?" In your example, I would just look at the tattoo for a quarter of a second, think "That looks kinda cool I guess." And just go back to work.
