https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/22/world/cat-men-dating-study-scli-intl-scn-wellness/index.html

Scientists showed hundreds of women photos oftwo men, both men pictured with and without a furry companion.
Their responses showed that the men's luck got noticeably worse when women saw the picture with a cat.

"Men holding cats were viewed as less masculine; more neurotic, agreeable, and open; and less dateable"

Disagree! You post a picture of your cat, that's an instant draw/conversation starter for me. I have no animals of my own to cuddle.

(None of those qualities mentioned are negatives to me either though)

Alright, I took a look at the link now, and I have to change my mind a bit. There's a big difference between taking a professional photo with your cat and taking a dopey picture with your cat at home. If you're paying a photographer to take pictures of yourself with your cat, you've got problems. In addition, using professional pictures with a backdrop like that on a dating site is turnoff in general. I wanna see you doing stuff or at some place interesting. Pictures like that tell me nothing about you as a person.

Oh shit, I didn't realize that they showed professional pictures taken with a cat. Yeahhh, that's way different than like a selfie with your cat laying on your chest, which is what I was picturing.

If you're already agreeable, then she doesn't get to have the fun of 'changing' you. Similarly, if you're already open, then she doesn't get to have the fun of breaking through your tough outer shell of manly bottled-up emotions.

Right it was obviously too set-up to be that likable.

I will humbly admit that I only read the excerpt and not the article. That guy deserves his mockery.

On the other hand, that doesn't necessarily negate the inherent absurdity of treating being agreeable and open as negative qualities.

Oh I'm right there with you, seeing agreeable and open as negatives is ridiculous. But it's definitely weird that they did this study using men posing for portraits with their cats rather than just normal pictures with a cat as if they're the same thing.

Note, that picture wasn't one used in the study, just a random one I googled because now I'm looking at people getting portraits taken with their cats.

When shown the cat-free picture of one of the subjects, 38% of women said they were likely or very likely to casually date him, while 37% said they'd consider a serious relationship with him.
But a picture of the same man holding a cat gave the respondents paws for thought -- and those numbers dropped to 33% for each category. Meanwhile, the proportion of women saying they'd never consider getting involved with him rose from 9% to 14%.

By comparison, positive ratings for the second subject did not decline significantly when he was pictured with a cat -- but women were more likely to rule him out as a potential partner. When he was pictured alone, 40% of respondents said they'd be unlikely or certain not to date him casually. But this rose to 45% when he was joined by a cat. Similarly, 41% said they'd be unlikely to consider him for a relationship, but 45% said the same when they saw him with the pet.

A total of 708 women aged between 18 and 24 were surveyed in the online experiment.

so it's either a weaker yes or a stronger no. Poor lads.

General reminder than women don't bell curve when it comes to rating attractiveness.

But yeah most people on dating sites are incredibly basic, it makes sense that they will tend to prefer dogs
