My biggest frustration is when people just don't get the idea that the people who make the hardware or OS neither make nor support most of the software, and that tech support lines are for fixing things, not hour-long tutorials.

If Photoshop isn't working, don't call Dell, or Microsoft, or Apple. Call the people who made it, dammit.

Right, I worked in one helpdesk job where if they for a walkthrough for tutorial, we were not allowed to help them. Something had to be broken, and we had to fix it.

That's really how it ought to be. You don't take your car to the mechanic and ask them to teach you how to drive it. You go there to get it fixed and get information about best practices so it keeps working. And you sure as hell don't ask them to try to fix the after-market sound system you installed across town.

I gotta wonder, does the ability to adapt just go away when you're old or did the world move slower when they were growing up, so they aren't equipped to adapt to a new thing every month?

When I see somebody struggle with a self checkout that tells you exactly what to do, I wonder if my brain is just gonna turn to mush after a certain age.

I'm remembering something Douglas Adams said that applies here.

I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
1. Anything that is in the world when youre born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when youre fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.
