they are blaming the governor.

Common sense says the protest didn't help. Both sides are truly assholes. I wish there was a third option.

I thought it was understood from the beginning that people going to large gatherings would contribute to spreading the virus.

The protests dont help coronavirus numbers.

But protests are happening everywhere. So something must be happening in FL that are causing its numbers to go up faster compared to other states.

Research in fact shows that the protests aren't to blame. Not that conservatives have ever given a fuck about science.

florida was opening beaches and shit as early as april and, like all the other red states who are experiencing spikes, they started careening upwards once tourism season was really in swing

So that is an interesting point... Minnesota has been on a steady downward trend while Florida is spiking like crazy. You would think if the protests were to blame, Minnesota would have one of the biggest spikes of all the states by now.

https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/06/09/coronavirus-whats-the-risk-for-george-floyd-protesters/
The Bedford analysis offers two different scenarios for crowd counts of 600,000 people, based on news sources and Wikipedia estimates of daily protests in more than 400 cities.

One estimate is low, assuming a fatality rate of 0.5% and a transmission rate of 0.9 one person with the disease infects, on average, 0.9 others. This scenario would lead to 1,500 new infections each day and 15,000 secondary infections among protestors friends and family, eventually causing 50 to 75 deaths. The higher estimate assumes a transmission rate of 0.95 and a fatality rate of 1%. This scenario would lead to 3,000 new infections a day and a total of 54,000 secondary infections, causing 500-540 deaths.

Almost as if opening the beaches was a bad idea.

Protestors have generally been wearing masks. Honestly a protest might be a good way to get a free mask from people there handing them out (haven't seen this just speculating).

You think people are wearing a mask to the beach? Fuck no

There was a lady handing out masks at the protest I went to. She only gave out two, because everyone else was wearing a mask already.

The protests in Florida weren't that big. They will cause some cases, of course. You also have almost biweekly Trump rallies in Jacksonville and those have been pretty clean, aside from a lack of masks.
Problems in Florida come from:
  1. People not taking it seriously. They're not wearing masks, bot washing hands, going out and expecting everything to be fully open.
  2. Tourism spreading disease to and from Florida.
  3. Old people with lower immune systems and high contact. Obviously not their fault, but one of the reason Florida should have pushed for a harder quarantine, not the very soft one they had.
Florida had no statewide curfew, just a "stay-at-home" order. The Florida government never took it seriously and it's become political to wear a mask or wash your hands. A smart government would immediately shut down interstate and international travel to a from Florida.

And that would speak to how Japan is able to deal with the spread so well. Most of their population wears masks during times like this.
