The funniest implication of this is that the switch version is likely more explicit than the ps4 one.

That's already happened a few times. See Omega Labyrinth Life (or just Labyrinth Life on PS4). It was heavily censored on PS4, and the Switch version ended up selling 3x as many copies despite a smaller install base.

I don't know much about PEGI, but CERO is generally the biggest concern for Japanese developers on Nintendo consoles. The ESRB is SUPER lenient these days. I've seen quite a few T-rated games that got the equivalent of an M in Japan. And it's pretty much impossible to get an AO unless you're specifically trying to get one.

Also what makes a game "weaboo"? That term refers to Westerners who think Japanese culture is superior to their own. If the game is made in Japan for Japanese audiences, then it can't possibly fit that description.

• Killing children

To date only 2 (3) games ever got rated AO despite not hitting any of the above. Manhunt, Hatred, and the third one is Thrill Kill which tanked because they kept getting into fights with the censorship and that made them go way over budget so it never officially released.

Didn't Hatred have a single level where you kill children? I vaguely remember hearing about that.

Also South Park: The Stick of Truth hits at least one or two of those buttons.

Steam is having a pretty big issue at the moment were anime visual novels are realing 'family friendly versions' and then developers post explicit mods in the discussion boards. Valve are also cracking down on anime visual novels and they barely crack down on anything.

But they've scrapped things like Swapnote after media reports blamed Nintendo for a child being molested. If some dickhead slips through some dodgy underage shit I don't think Nintendo would have a conservative response.

But yes Sony California making these decisions is why things are tougher for niche Japanese developers. Honestly they'd probably just ban them if they thought they could clearly find a way to get rid of them. They don't care. If you care about these games it's time to go PC or Switch. But there's a reason it's always niche Japanese visual novels that constantly have these issues.

i think it's more that games that have a certain backing, hype, etc. are the ones that get the free pass from sony as they're probably aware they couldn't muscle around those IPs/devs. meanwhile, smaller teams or niche games are open season for sony to do as it pleases.

They're hard for Japanese developers to reach and get feedback on what is and isn't allowed. They're more similar to dealing with a company like Xbox these days.

They're a Western focused gaming company these days but I don't think everyone has got the memo just yet. PS4 didn't even particularly sell all that well in Japan.

Basically there's too many of these games to properly evaluate. Let them go wild and free you get explicit porn garbage. Crack down and other games get caught in the net. It's a lot of effort for games that probably sell a few thousand at most.
