The massive Wailord is a wild level 80 Wailord.

The smaller one is the one the person playing the game has set to follow them.

Apparently some people are upset that Pokemon that follow you aren't actually to scale

Excuse me. Wailord never fought Rodan. And his size seems to be really inconsistent. I mean, one minute, he's 10 feet tall. The next, his feet are as big as a lake.

That's a great idea.

With Wailord that would cause some hilarously bad clipping issues.

Wailord would be constantly phasing though trees and cliffs and shit.

Mostly because they did it to scale (ish) in Let's Go.

People should be okay with this. Sword and Shield have a handful of Pokemon that are over 30 feet long and one that is 65 feet long. It's great that they can accompany us outside now, but it would NOT work for them to actually be that large. They would not fit in the camera frame, they would block your view of the landscape when you are moving around, and they would clip awfully against walls, buildings, trees, people, etc.

You just have to accept that the ones that follow you aren't going to be 40 feet long. I guess you could argue they should keep the wild ones consistent with that, but I like seeing them big in the wild.
