• walk around for a bit
• Spend 20 minutes reading descriptions of items
• Get lost
• Backtrack
• die to some low level skeleton
• realise that I actually had been playing for an hour, achieved absolutely nothing and have to do it all again
• shitpost on the internet in frustration
• Internet: "git gud"
• Decide I hate this game and put it away in an epic rage quit
• Revisit the entire idea again in 6 months time

You really do have to "git gud"

Also don't go to the catacombs straight away. Go up the stairs to the Undead Burg. That's the actual first area of the game. The rest are for later on or grabbing items early if you're a pro.

This is maybe the issue. Dark Souls beginners tip #1: if you see skeletons, you are going the wrong way. Turn back and come back there later on.

I know in my heart if I can just inch my head over the crest of the difficulty wave, or learning peak or whatever you want to call it, the rest will fall into place. After all that happened in Hollow Knight, and people say that game is basically the same. I hated hollow knight for the first 5-10 hours and then afterwards it became an amazing game once I had a clue of what was going on.

Steep curve when youre new. Hard to explain what it is. I got stuck in the Burg for an embarassingly long time, but it was exciting as well. Game makes you Respect it early on.

If you need an extra layer of confidence early on in your first playthrough, be a pyromancer or a sorcerer.

Exactly, press on and you'll find your flow/get used to dying and everything

The game can be absolutely breathtaking so I think it's worth that initial effort

If youre in Dark Souls 1 and getting killed by Skeletons then youre going to the wrong place in the beginning
