I don't doubt that the Leafs can win a cup with this foundation, just not this season. In the next few years? Absolutely they are going to be a strong team and in contention for years to come. But so will a few other extremely strong teams. They have a lot of young offense, but unfortunately there's a ton of money tied into that and you can't win without defense.

Detroit's defense is atrocious and Howard has always been average and aging, they were on pace for a historically miserable season. Larkin, Bertuzzi, Mantha can all have 100+ point seasons and can't be a winning team when they are allowing 5 goals every night. When the D and the goalie take you out of the game early, it's always an uphill battle.

Toronto needs to deal one of those big 4 up front and get some help on the blueline, and definitely get their goaltending figured out.

Also this might be the first NHL thread on CE that hit 50+ posts, minus ongoing playoff discussion.

Leafs were just going to lose to the bruins anyways.

Well, I guess they could have lost to Washington, Tampa, or Phili in the first round, instead.

Or miss the playoffs entirely.

We just need 1 more solid defense and a goalie and boom the Cup is ours for like the next 2-4 years if you factor in inflation also. The butthurt from Leaf haters would be a joy to see XD!!!
