A Portland woman who helped coordinate the rescue of a 300-pound Yorkshire pig from Waterfront Park early Sunday said a group of people who were trying to save the pig told her the swine was destined for slaughter.

Mary McDonald-Lewis said she received a call about 1 a.m. Sunday to aid in the rescue of a pig found downtown.

She said when she arrived, a small group of people heading to Saturdays demonstrations said the pig was originally with a man who told them of his plans to sacrifice the pig to end all police brutality.

McDonald-Lewis on Tuesday discussed her role in the pigs rescue after readers questioned claims about the pigs fate, particularly a Facebook post by a Portland officer who wrote that police saved the pig from being used as a grisly protest prop.

Officer Brian Pelster, with the Police Bureau for 10 years, told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Tuesday thats what McDonald-Lewis reported when he arrived Sunday at Waterfront Park. She told him that the animal was going to be slaughtered so its head could be used in the protest, Pelster said.

It didnt sound far-fetched since during more than a week of unrest in Portland, he said hed seen a severed pig head near the Elk Fountain.

Sue Gemmell, who lives in Portland, said her daughter encountered the pig late Saturday while going to the protests with friends and stayed with it for hours to keep it safe while Gemmell and others tried to have it relocated.

Gemmell then went to meet her daughter and said she didnt hear the claim about the pigs slaughter.

She said her daughter and friends left about 2 a.m. Sunday while she and McDonald-Lewis stayed behind to guard the animal until police arrived.

Pelster said he and other officers helped load the pig, who by morning had been given the name Betty, into a police van. He then drove it to a farm.

Its going to live out its days as kind of a pet, he said. Its not headed to the slaughterhouse.

As for the police bureau van, he hosed it down but it could use a deeper cleaning, he said.

Its still got a little funkiness to it, he said. We wrote it up to have some deodorizer put in there.

At this point I wouldn't be against the military organizing and doing what needs to be done to the protestors. Calling them animals isn't even fair to the pig in this picture. Glad it was saved from humanity's stupidity.
