Current Events > I honestly dont understand how UPS plans their deliveries.

I'm waiting for an expensive package so i have to be here. UPS has the little uber like map now to track drivers.

Instead of delivering packages based off proximity the driver is zig zagging across the city. He was a block away from my house and now he's 4 blocks south. Then he comes back towards my house then goes back like 6 blocks

Maybe their algorithms are designed to prioritize putting "signature required" deliveries after normal working hours when someone is more likely to be home.

They save gasoline by only using right turns.

I'm sure they have traffic data and such to try and get the theoretical quickest route

If I have a package like that, I usually call ahead a day or so to pick it up personally

Its not signature required i just dont want it left on my doorstep so i decided to chill at home today and wait for it

I could accept that if Amazon in my area did the same thing. What i've noticed is that if someone has something a block away im usually next. If amazon delivers something i get the same little map

Also, the UPS pickup in my area is out in the middle of a canyon/deserty area and its 90 degrees where im at and im coastal. I dont wanna trek out into 100 degree weather for it

Is there a way to use google maps/gps to find the most optimal route if you have like 12 locations you need to hit?

I'm sure it can if you add stops but these are residential streets. So its not like they are avoiding freeways or toll roads.

They are going blocks in different directions. So instead of going ABCD they are going ADCB.

Yeah, I can't watch their map since it drives me crazy, lol. I remember once they were like a street over from me but didn't show up until a few hours later. I don't know how they calculate their routes, but it makes little sense to me.

So, he was literally in the apartments next to mine. Coming out of them he would have to go right to get to me. Dude takes a left and goes to an apartment complex down the street about a block and a half away.

UPS drivers are bound to the algorithm. Where it tells them to go next, they go or else they get in trouble. Management is super, super strict about how they run their routes. When you see the UPS driver running up to your door to drop off your package, he's running for a reason.

I dont blame the drivers. I think the UPS system is dumb. It's sending him all over rather than whats close to them.
