Supposedly religion just fizzled away on Earth sometime in the past of Star Trek. what I always wondered about was what did the final days of the Catholic Church look like. how did the final pope go out. did they just let one final dude die in office and then not bother to elect someone new? or did he resign? did he admit it was all fake? I kinda wish there was like a Fake documentary set in-universe about how that took place. it would be interesting.

They probably won't ever do anything like that. Or even go into details of modern countries uniting.

The reason for this is humanity in Star Trek is the ideal version for the most part, of what we should strive to be. They already got an episode banned in the UK for years. They're not gonna offend an entire religion

The backstory of Star Trek is that there were a lot of horrific wars all over Earth, so the end of the Catholic Church was probably a little more violent than what you suggested.

The thing about Star Trek is that it's no longer a future sci-fi series but an alternate future sci-fi series. The Eugenics Wars of the 1990's never happened, so we're definitively on a different timeline.
