I ask because I am asian and when people get married they merge finances, actually even before that once you're engaged and live together you generally do. Even so definitely at marriage - prenup or not.

I grew up in Canada and it's a very diverse country but I always here time and time again about people who are married with kids and a house yet keep finances separate. Neither is well off so it's not some sort of prenup thing. Debts get shared upon divorce anyways if you marry you're taking half their debt so it makes no fucking sense.

It just so happens to be caucasian people that I see do this yet I've never heard of a logical reason why

I dont know but Ive seen my parents fight over finances and this is a good way to avoid that. I recommend a joint account as well as separate accounts. So you can buy video games and your wife can buy clothes without arguing about it.

Not white but I have a joint with my wife and a separate account so I can buy surprise gifts without her knowing.

I never thought of it as a white person thing, but my wife and I have always kept our personal finances mostly seperate. We usually have a joint account in case we need to transfer funds around, but she has her own account and I have mine.

We never really discussed it, that just happened that way.

I don't know why you think its a white thing, though I would think asking why is anything a certain race thing would be against the rules.

As an actual answer, its usually recommended now, for anyone not just white people, because of the super high divorce rate. Its somewhere around 50% so literally a coin flip. It makes divorce at least slightly easier if you already have separate banking accounts.

I wouldn't say that.

Like I said, my wife and I have mostly kept our personal finances seperate and we are most certainly not wealthy.
