i played it originally when it came out but just started playing the switch version yesterday and i forgot how great it is

Yeah, spent a lot of time on that series and several if the other games they've made like it. Phantom Brave's the only one I didn't really enjoy.

1 is pretty short
2 was better.
3 onwards opened up the post game way more
5 changed the class world and made grinding a bit easier in some ways and streamlined it more but you'll be spending at lesat a few hundred hours trying to 20 star Baal on Carnage

Yea, played every mainline game, and even the most of the spins offs like that Disagea novel game and print hero. Although the barrier to getting super OP was always to hard and time consuming for me to overcome usually.

La Pucelle Tactics was great --- even better asking for the game at a french game store. XD

Out of all these, think I spent the most time with Makai Kingdom and Disgaea 5.

Also honorable mention to Soul Nomad.

5 was pretty good, compared to three and 4. Put all my hours in 2, at least a couple hundred. Not as many in the first one.

I played Phantom Brave years ago on the PS2 and couldn't get past a certain chapter. Got it for the PSP, learned how to break the game, and went from getting wrecked to soloing the rest of the story with Ash.

So yeah, it's either be pathetic or be God...Until you get to end game, where enemies are one-shotting my god and I can't make significant improvements to his strength level.

Man, I've played a lot of JRPGs and I can't imagine pouring hundreds of hours into these games. I wonder what the draw is.

for me the gameplay is really great and there are limitless things you can do in the games. i have never put anywhere near what others have in en but i can see how someone would sink hundreds of hours in disgaea

The newer ones are a lot more streamlined so you don't even need that many hours unless you just enjoy it.
It's also hilarious how they kind of integrate 'cheating' and being underhanded to get ahead
