For myself, I was alarmed at the lowkey casual racism people hold towards aboriginal australians. Just a lowkey acceptance among wider society that they're lowlifes, dodgy and stupid.

Prison scum have to do something to feel better about themselves.

Seriously though, it's like fucking Jim Crow over there when it comes to aboriginals. I'd even argue they're treated worse now than Native Americans were in the fucking 1800's.

Have any white colonists, or colonists of any race for that matter ever respected the rights of indigenous peoples?

As an Australian, casual racism is a way of life in this country. It's disgusting. That, and the fact that one woman a week dies at the hands of their current or former partner.

it's similar to how the roma are treated in europe

not that there isn't lots of racism against other groups, but

they don't even try to pretend when it comes to roma

I remember when I was 16 at the beach with my brother and his (now ex) wife in Perth. This aboriginal man and his family walked by. My sister in law quickly got out of the water and picked up her purse and moved away from him.

The aboriginal guy went off on her. I'd never seen anything like it. It was the ugliest scene I'd ever scene. He just kept asking her why she did that and what the fuck her problem was and that she embarrased him in front of his kids and that they didn't need to see that. She just acted like she was terrified of him. Later in private she said some truly despicable things that I can't repeat here.

The morale of the story is, she didn't ever admit she was wrong or anything. She just doubled down on the idea that "they are dangerous".

Yes. That's pretty much how it is here.

It took until the last decade to apologise for taking aboriginal babies away from their parents in the 70s/80s (read: The Stolen Generation)

Not to actually you, but it went on for far longer than that. Particularly in Queensland.

Dont forget that there are still (white) people who would tell you that those children were better off away from their parents, families and culture and that the government of the time did them a favour. Its fucking despicable.

My mum tends to call the Roma the Aboriginals of Europe. Not in any racist sense, but in the sense that both get shat on repeatedly. The systematic racism towards Roma is unbelievable. I remember reading something about 15 years ago that they were barred from citizenship in many European countries, even if their families have been living there for generations. I dont think much would have changed.

My maternal grandmother was Romany and had olive skin. When she moved to North Queensland in the 1970s, people would mistake her for an Aboriginal woman and treated her like crap. Good work, guys.

My other grandmother was Aboriginal and was stolen generation. She had a phobia around going in the sun in case she tanned and people mistook her for an Aboriginal woman. Mind you, she also hated my mother because her father was Jewish. So, go figure.

There were plenty of massacres of Aboriginal people, up until the 1920s.

He was saying they're treated worse than that now, in 2020, not in the 1920s
