Qualified Immunity doesn't protect bad cops, it protects good cops. Qualified Immunity means a cop, acting properly and in good faith, cannot be held accountable if they make a mistake so long as the mistake isn't negligent. It doesn't protect cops who use excessive force or are otherwise corrupt or abusive, their protection is coming from the departments. All removing qualified immunity will do is make things worse for good cops while not changing anything for bad ones.

Are you sure about that?

that's why the solution is defunding the police and allocating those funds to programs that actually help people

Yup. If departments were doing their job and firing/prosecuting bad cops it wouldn't do a thing for them. It's a symptom of the overall problem, not the problem itself.

Yeah no. Defunding the police is an awful idea that will just replace our current problems with mountains of new ones.

Remember that case in 2016, where a cop shot an innocent man in a car, in front of his wife and daughter? He was acquitted of all charges.

Its not supposed to protect bad cops, but that's how its being used, which means it needs to go or at least be revised.

yes, a fundamentally different system would have fundamentally different problems. how astute of you to recognize that. however, that is not an actual criticism of the idea itself

Or we remove the way bad cops are able to be protected by it, which is the actual problem.

Cops should be punished for legal mistakes, even if they make that mistake in good faith

you know, just like how I cant use the defense I didnt know it was against the law?

and just like how I can be fired from my job for fucking up, even if I tried my best?

The fuckhead who shot Castile went to court and a jury let him go.

If immunity applied it wouldn't have ever gone to a jury.

Higher standards for cops. No safety nets. If they can't handle it they shouldn't be cops.

Unless I'm missing something, qualified immunity just protects from civil lawsuits. It wouldn't affect a criminal trial.

Qualified immunity has nothing to do with criminal trials.

It doesn't protect abuse or corruption at all.

Qualified immunity isn't a safety net, it's protecting cops when they act correctly and things still go wrong.

I got it right though. Qualified Immunity protects them from civil action, not legal consequences.
