Do you prefer a membrane keyboard or a mechanical keyboard?

Ive been using a mechanical for a while but got a pretty good Corsair keyboard for cheap. Its just a normal membrane and my friend is making a deal out of it not being mechanical.

I know mechanical last longer but ive never really cared about it.

Mechanical, no contest. Topre with rubber domes are cool too, though.

Most keyboards are membrane. Mechanical ones are more expensive, and from what I've heard, noisier too.

they arent that much noisier really. Theres a noticeable click but you get used to it quick. Personally, it made my typing better because i can hear and feel it a little different.

but when im at work i use a normal 10 dollar logictech keyboard that i bring from home and i honestly cant feel the difference at this point

hmm. Well if they're more common than the keyboards I used with my desktops were probably membranes, but I actually don't know that for sure.

I'm using a labtop currently, don't have a separate keyboard for it, but I don't like labtop keyboards anyway so thats irrelevant.

That seems like a weird thing to care that strongly about. I honestly had no idea about this distinction. I'm not even sure i've heard the term membrane keyboard before this topic and thats apparently the more common type.

If you type a lot, it makes a big difference.

But if you're in the know and can afford mechanical, who honestly does pick membrane? Yeah, using a membrane isn't terrible or anything, but mechanical keyboards are more satisfying to use and are highly customizable.

I'll admit to being biased since I'm deep down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole and have built my own custom boards, lol.

if you pop the caps off a membrane keyboard you'll see little rubber domes, if you scrape those off you'll see contact points on the back of them and a circuit board underneath them. they work by compressing the dome and touching the contact points to the board.

mechanical keyboards have mechanical switches inside of them, they come in different types but the major difference between mechanical and membrane is that the mechanical switches are more sturdy and resistant to use/abuse. membrane keyboards will fail from use as the rubber wears out, or the glue holding the membrane to the board fails, or if you spill liquid on the board.

there's also a tactile feel difference, and even a noise difference, but that is dependent on the switch type itself.

You can put o rings on the keys to dampen the bottom out sound. I put them on my cherry blues and love the sound. All the click with none of the clack.

O-rings aren't so popular these days, at least in the enthusiast communities. They limit key travel and there's plenty of switches that have built in sound damping now.

But yeah, that is a potential fix for the more casual mechanical keyboard fan, or if you really like your existing board/switch type.

Yeah I'm as casual of a mech keyboard fan as it gets. Got me a basic ducky one 2 with a color scheme like, cherry mx blues, and slapped some o rings on them. No interest in going further.

Membrane is fine, such as with the Model M. But nobody who voted actually prefers rubber dome nonsense to a mechanical keyboard. There's a reason those are commonly advertised as "mechanical feel" to trick people who do not fully understand what they are doing into wasting their money.
