slave owners bought us from africa. they paid money for us. they brought us to america on ships where we would probably die and then forced us to work on their plantations. they made millions of dollars off our labor, and we helped make the country what it was.

then we were set free, and suddently we're the bad guys??? we're the criminals? well thats only because the former slaveowners passed laws (social or actual laws) that prevented us from actually succeding in america. want to buy land? TOO BAD. want to go to school? NOPE. want to just live your life? HAH SIKE! LYNCHED!

like what did we do??? they brought us here! we didn't sign up! its not like we said "yeah ill go to america and be a slave for 3-4 generations and then be an asshole. sign me up!"

HUH????

The most fucked up part is the whole world views black people the same way, it's not even just the US

Like you'd think they would hate white people for all the evil shit that they've done since humanity started, but no black people are the ones that are hated because of slavery and institutionalized racism

The world is twisted as fuck bro

Lets go back in time and arm the slaves. Or at least convince Lincoln to finish the job.

I never understood the " Go back to Africa" thing. The slaves who came over were already slaves in Africa.

Alot of ethinc hate still going on over there.

Bigotry appeals to the tribalistic parts of our brains.

The people who are different can be stigmatized. We can justify it by claiming they're inferior or depraved. That's what colonizers did. They didn't really see Africans as people like them, they just saw people it'd be easy to seize. Land for the taking, it's the white man's burden.

Black people were systematically stigmatized legally and socially for centuries. Through a concerted effort. "We have a good thing going"

Slavery was practiced less than six generations ago, and segregation was only two generations ago. The racism that drove these things didn't just evaporate when the laws changed. It still gets passed along, including today.

How many generations does it take to wash away the bigotry that was given many generations of time to take root? Definitely a long time. We can pass laws that try to treat people equally, but that doesn't fix the racist attitudes just like that. Whether some people realize it or not, it's still festering. It shows up in police most noticeably.

Racist people aren't reflecting on the questions you're asking. In general, they aren't pausing to consider that black people didn't agree to be in this position. You're black in America, so you kind of have to do this introspection. But they don't--they don't have to really think about the consequences of what they say and do. (And they don't want to think about it)

"In the Peoria speech, Lincoln said that slavery was wrong, Foner says, and then admitted that he didn't know what should be done about it, even contemplating "free[ing] all the slaves, and send[ing] them to Liberia to their own native land."
