what with countless youtube instructional tutorials

and also Photomath app is ridiculous. take a picture of a problem with your phone and it gives you not just the answer but detailed step by step explanation

I wish these existed back in high school

Means nothing if you can't understand the explanation well enough to reproduce the results on exams

That's mostly because people study math like they study other subjects; they read it and say, "Oh yeah, I get it. I could do that." You got to pick up a pencil and paper and actually do it yourself for it to sink in. At least that was my breakthrough.

Yup. Mathematics and learning/understanding it involves something like muscle memory in a sense. (Not literally but it's the best analogy I know.)

Pre YouTube but I failed a math course in high school when 2 family members died and a teacher I really looked up to committed suicide the day before my final.

Guess my head wasn't in it.

Jesus, no wonder... That must've been really rough for you.

It was brutal. A couple deaths later in the year kinda cemented it as an "annus horribilis" in my life, but time and appropriate tributes healed those wounds.

Oddly enough I ended up moving to the town where my teacher grew up and his parents live nearby. I haven't worked up the courage to tell them what a positive influence he was (I met them briefly at his funeral but that was 16 years ago).

Besides the lack of attempt by few, some people just dont get math.

Some people are just terrible at math. I failed every math class my freshmen and sophomore year.

My senior year in highschool was just math classes that I couldn't pass the first time around.

I could see someone struggling with factoring polynomials. It's largely a kinda BS guess and check deal unless you just happen to notice the solution immediately.

Cal 1 was the third most overhyped (in terms of difficulty) class I ever took. Second was Cal 3, and first was Diff EQ.

Cal 2, oddly enough, was one of the most underhyped.

I was always pretty terrible with math in my younger days. I think my problem was that I was more worried about the teacher calling upon me to solve a problem in front of the rest of the class that I just wasn't taking it in as well as I should have. When I started taking college math I was probably doing the best I'd ever done in that subject.

Eh, depends on the polynomial really.

What about when your vision suddenly goes to hell and you can't see what is going on with the chalkboard? Happened to me during my freshman year taking Algebra. The teacher was sympathetic and gave me a D. Now I have a B.S. in math so it's not all bad.

I remember seeing some video on Facebook a few months back about how they teach long division now, and fuck me if it was taught that way when I was a kid I probably wouldve struggled too. Dont get me wrong, it worked, but it was so overly complicated.

Edit: wow I found it but it actually multiplication

online video are shit, they explain only the basic concept without proper exercises
math in some prestigious schools can be very hard, almost in the same difficulty as universities.
also they fail because they were just lazy so no amount of resources can help them

Eh the video isn't really a fair comparison. One side is trying to teach it, while the other is just solving the problem. I did it faster in my head than this guy did on paper by factoring 35 into 5x7 and 12 into 2x6, applying the associative property to turn it into (7x6) x (5x2) and doing it that way, but I didn't have to show my work on paper either.

But that said, not everyone is a visual learner and it really annoys me that you hear stories of kids getting their test questions graded wrong for not drawing the stupid pictures even if they gave the right answer and showed their work.
