You could call it the Dorothy rule after the protagonist of The Wizard of Oz. It might be the witches and scarecrows that keep things interesting, but you need that down-to-Earth character for the audience to be able to gravitate toward and identify with on some level. Otherwise, your show is an absolute sugar high. A sugar high is fine if you want your audience to be divided up between people under 12 and people over 21 who mix Kool-Aid and Jack Daniels.
