i'm talking about the avg person or most. A small perc. of people want to raise the legal of adulthood to 25 cause they argue most people don't fully develop until that age, do you agree with that number?

At 18, there's still the naive idealism and invincibility that remains to be crushed.

By 25, life should have had sufficient enough time to smack you across the face for the (harsh) reality that it is.

Averages, of course.

That would screw up the ambitions of a lot of folks who want to graduate from college without debt (by using the GI bill) before 30.

Brain scans have shown that humans reach full cognitive function by the age of 13-15. You then keep that full cognitive function until you reach your 50s when it starts declining for everyone. Though it has been found out to decline as early as 45 for some.

To put that in perspective. Those people that everyone calls to young and immature and not able to make informed decisions, have higher cognitive brain function then about 80% of the United States Senate and probably at least half of the House as well considering the average age is 59.

This would be a shitty idea that would eventually lead to a war. Not to mention it would fuck up the gene pool as for every year a woman is over the age of 30 it increases the risk of birth defects and risks to the mother. Not to mention the fact it is much hard for a woman to get pregnant at 30+. Making it illegal to have sex and start a family before 25 would destroy our species.

It's misleading to suggest that "full cognitive function" is the be-all and end-all of brain development. For instance the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for rational decision-making) is still very much developing through late teens and even early 20s. Nearly all of the adult population will complete their prefrontal cortex development by the mid-20s which is why 25 is frequently tossed around as the age of mental maturity.

Probably. But as far as basic cognitive ability, youre an adult by 16-17 imo. So sophomore-junior in high school.

And you think cogntive function has nothing to do with decision making? What is more misleading is the nonsense people keep spouting off about the brain not being fully developed until 25 and that having this massive effect on every aspect of someone's life and everything they ever do. The reason teenagers seem more immature is because that is how they are treated. People act the way you treat them mo matter the age. Teenagers used to be full adult members of society in past civilizations and there wasn't all this whining about them like they needed their hands held. So clearly they have the mental capacity for it, the only difference between now and then is how they are treated.

Not to mention the fact we charge people as young as 12 as adults for crimes saying they should know better. But if the "brain isn't fully developed" until 25 then clearly they don't know better and no one under the age of 25 should ever go to jail for anything ever again.

Great posts. People hate to admit it for cultural reasons but kids and young adults are just flatly more competent than old people. I remember when I was that age in school, I always found it baffling just how fucking dumb the adults that were supposed to be teaching us actually were. Most of them should have been slopping out port-o-johns
