I know it's a dumb question but which punctuation is correct:

"Do it now. Sometimes later becomes 'never.'"
OR
"Do it now. Sometimes 'later' becomes 'never'."

It's a quotation so I do need the quotation marks around the entire thing, but I'm not sure if the quotation mark next to never comes before or after the period. Please help!

That's a comma splice, so your supposed teacher wife needs to rethink her education.

Would a semicolon be better

semicolon or period works fine.

Yeah. you could argue for a semicolon, though.

Sure. Really just a matter of taste or emphasis.

It bothers me that the period goes within quotations. Sure, we have the Brits beat by excising the superfluous u, but they have better grouping.

You guys are wrong lol. Its only for dialogue that the quotation goes outside the period. Hes not saying later becomes never-period, hes saying later becomes never.

I think a regular colon would fit better in this case.

Who is the assigner/reviewer? Who is their audience?

US: Do it "Now"; sometimes "Later" becomes "Never."
UK: Do it 'Now'; sometimes 'Later' becomes 'Never'.

Ok thank you all for replying lol but after this topic I feel more confused than ever

So my university English professor assured me that the period always goes inside the quotation marks, but my brain hates that since it doesnt seem like the logical/aesthetic choice

IIRC, American rules put the punctuation inside the quotes, and British rules put it outside.

Logic and convention frequently disagree.

It's not really "a war of words"... it's more like "a struggle on how to best represent, in writing, the pauses [around each word]."

Seriously, he is wrong, lol. I mean maybe some people accept that but I even asked 2 people with Masters in Linguistics (an older friend of mine and my mom who has a couple of Masters degrees, the other being in I believe its called Information Technology or something like that shes been a librarian for ~50 years so whatever Masters you would have needed for the career back then is what it is). They both agreed with me that the 2nd (bottom) one is right.

I personally also tested out of the highest levels of English classes when I applied for university and took the entrance/qualifying exam or whatever they call it.

Library/Information Architecture/Sciences (two-words; some combination of these). The name usually depends on when and where the program was offered.

Kind of overly wordy though.

No, he isn't. In American style this is correct. Also worth noting that a Master's in Linguistics doesn't necessarily necessitate knowledge of this. Most of linguistics is not necessarily concerned with orthography.
