I think what happened is that the top higher ups at WB don't know anything about comic books and can't be bothered to even do 5 minutes of research into what they are like or why people like them. and they just saw that the Nolan Batman trilogy did really good. and all they saw was "oh. Superman is also owned by us. he's a comic character too. we should just make a movie like the Nolan Batman movies but for Superman" not realizing that Superman is very different from Batman. and that what works for Batman doesn't work for every super hero ...
