Rural Pennsylvania has trained me to hate mountain driving with the fury of a thousand suns. Really, driving anywhere in the Appalachians is hell.

Trauma's a bitch. I'm terrified of driving on the freeway and freaked out when I thought I was going to get boxed into an onramp. Had to pull over in residential and breathe for a while.

I don't drive in Manhattan as advice from my dad. Literally no reason to take our car there instead of using public transportation. On the other hand, it's probably because so many people are walking that traffic is insanely congested and you're always on the lookout for people walking in front of your car and not following traffic signals.

Mountain driving I would imagine is hard for the driver, but scenic for the passenger. I was on a bus in Ecuador going from Quito to Manta (passing through the Andes Mountains) and we were on manmade roads able to see the mountaintops and where the clouds meet the mountains. It was a nice scene (but people live on the mountain!)

In Trinidad we were driving through the mountains in the north to get to Maracas Beach, and holy fuck the mountains looked treacherous. One wrong turn and you're doomed. There was barely any fences or safety through the roads.

Voted before I saw mountain driving at the bottom. I drove the Million Dollar Highway once between Silverton and Ouray in Colorado and it was goddamned terrifying. Sheer drops without any guardrails, massive switchbacks you had to slow to a crawl for, and lunatics that would pass me going way over the limit. It was beautiful, don't get me wrong, but I don't think I ever want to make that drive again.

Ever see the videos of middle eastern driving? That's the worst kind of driving. One Youtuber I follow(best food review show ever) said that his scariest moment was in the back of a Indian cab who was going well over the speed limit with no seatbelts in the vehicle.

As a fellow PA resident, I do enjoy the rural driving, but I hate it at night when I'm in heavily wooded areas. After hitting a deer I've become kinda paranoid that I'm gonna again. Snow is the only thing that makes me hate mountain driving, which having a small car makes it even worse.

Still, 99% of the time it's far better than the Hell that was driving in DC, New York and Annapolis.

Rural driving with no trees around on a nice day with the mountains in the far distant as the sun is shining is the absolute best though.

When I first moved to Nevada my cousin took me for a drive up to Lake Tahoe. In the winter. At night. Driving about 15 miles over the limit. I'm actually glad a cop stopped us and told him to slow down or we might hit black ice. I never wanted to drive up there after that.

Driving to work, I have to ascend and descent a mountain that songs have been written about for killing truckers because it's one of the worse inclines and declines in the entire USA as far as grade percentage. I've had to drive it in heavy rain and rarely snow, and I legitimately feared for my life it was so fucking scary. There's an absurd lack of guard rails and a 1000+ foot spill if you go off road.

So mountains for me.

Mountain, easily. Switchbacks are evil and motion sickness is a bitch. I'd rather navigate through shitty traffic 10/10 times.

Driving the Appalachian backroads across the mountains in western VA was terrifying. Narrow roads, no guard rails, and locals that speed (usually in oversized pickups)

Views were breathtaking though. I had a good set of pictures when I crossed over the mountains from the valley in Luray into the back way into Edinburgh

Driving in Boston is the worst. Old ass roads, narrow lanes, and the worst potholes. Getting out the city during rush hour is easily 2+ hours.

You know ironically, I can make more of an argument for having an SUV in NYC than in the Adirondacks. The Roads in the city are actually worse..and just about as 'bad' unpaved roads. But at least the grid makes sense...But also it's bumper cars down there. Pro-tip never bring a car onto Manhatten.

And Bostons roads and nuts. Some where actually cow paths first. Milk street, I'm looking at you. Then they trow in the trick of having nicknames for their road. Com Ave. I'm looking at you.

Also Driving in Vermont. Going North - South, no problem. Driving East - West...That a totally different experance.

Also a PA resident, don't mind rural driving unless it's snowy or dark.

Driving in a planned city like NYC seems easy because it's pretty much a grid. Downtown Pittsburgh is about the worst experience ever. I miss a turn so I figure I'll go up one more block and turn, right? Nope, next thing I know I'm merging onto the parkway and heading toward the airport or some shit. Then to exit you have just a few feet of road to get 4 lanes over.

Tired Driving is really bad as well. Funny we live in a society that requires people to be hopped up on Caffeine to get by.
