Mostly faithful. It's cheesy, voice acting is questionable, and the soundtrack is wonderful. For me, it's the definitive Mana game, and I love it.

With spellcasting now in real time instead of screen-freezing, Angela is an absolute terror now and Rune Master is very, very viable. It also means that there's very few true full-screen techs out there, and usually reserved for endgame/post-game. If it's coming and you're quick, you can dodge it.

My only regret is that my favorite boss fight, while it looks awesome, plays janky as hell. Without spoiling, let's just say it takes place in midair.

Angela and Hawkeye are my favorite voices. Duran and Riesz are okay. Kevin's speech pattern makes him hard to listen to. Same with Charlotte, only times three.

Voice acting is atrocious, aside from Hawkeye and Angela. Even the NPCs have horrible voices (the innkeepers, Jessica, the cat merchants, the elementalsnamely Lumina, etc will make you cringe every single time). It's a 25 year old game so the story remains unchanged. That said, it doesn't really feel urgent and fleshed out, I'd say even less so in this version since the game feels more bright and bubbly than the original.

The combat is where it shines, though. It's a large revamp from the original and the class paths are more balanced (though annoying and limited in resources to revert class changes). Magic is much better as well and more interactive. New Game+ is a great new feature but it holds your hand too much in that you can't configure it to your liking. The second playthrough will be fine if you choose three different characters, but anything after that removes any challenge from the game. This is pretty bad for replay value if they don't release some kind of patch. The music is also very good and a nice nod to the original unlike the terrible arrangements from the Secret of Mana remake.

It's a fun game, I think I played it over the course of two weeks and grabbed most of the trophies (didn't do a 3rd playthrough for the last two yet). The bonus dungeon was a nice addition, but don't expect anything difficult even on Hard difficulty.

Yeah, this is a problem I have with it as well. I fully plan on making this game my first platinum (long overdue) but considering I have to play through it three times to get trophies for completing each story arc, I'll have to re-use characters. I'm stuck between making the game trivially easy or not using New Game+ at all.
