Killing off the at-risk doesn't seem like a solution either, because that's what it would take for "natural herd immunity". (I may have a personal stake, considering I'm one of them.)

There is gray here, not just black and white. There were guidelines set out for phased reopenings. Some, primarily red, states are ignoring them and their infection rates unsurprisingly are going up again.

Remember: The original plan was to keep the Hospitals from being overwhelmed and NOT from trying to keep everyone unable to catch the virus. Obviously we still don't want a lot of people getting the virus and that's why we're wearing the masks; to lower the odds of people getting the virus. The goal was to never stop the virus completely.

a gym is probably one of the highest risk environments to catch covid in. Think of all the bodily fluids like sweat going around, along with a mass of people in one spot. Just like barbershops and the ilke, it was just common sense that they'll be the last ones to open up

Yeah, keep hospitals from being overwhelmed by flattening the curve... How do you flatten the curve when a highly contagious and deadly airborne virus is going around? Stay at home. If you do need to go out, follow social distancing guidelines and wear a mask.
