but they dont want to move up, become a manager or progress in their job

i get that some promotions may not be worth the stress. especially those which will barely give you a pay rise. but in the longer term it might be worth it

im not smart at all nor am i talented in the field that im working in. my background and upbringing didnt really gear me towards having that type of drive by having happiness + success defined by status and titles

i guess im just envious about not feeling like i have a good career compared to a lot of my friends who are doing better. and just want like im good at doing something

Funny. In my experience you NEED to be amazing at what you do to even get a shitty low level job. There's no room for anything less than perfection anymore.

Honestly I'd respect somebody like that more than somebody endlessly trying to climb the ladder

My co-workers feel this way towards me. I'm capable of more but at the moment I'm happy with what I'm doing plus I rather spend my time with my wife and kids rather than spending/dealing with shit from work. Once the kids get bigger I will most likely try but for now, fuck that shit.

I feel like the only thing I have "raw talent" in is writing/language usage (the technical side rather than the creative side). However jobs in that area aren't exactly easy to come by nor do they typically pay well.

I'm the same. I'm worried about my work life balance changing going for a different job.

But I also feel anxious in the long run that I'm not succeeding enough. Even though logically I know I can essentially get what I want and do what I want.

it's a shame that the world doesn't work in that way

i get the concerns about work life balance, family and so on. but it's annoying because you have raw skill that lots of ppl inc myself would love to have and feels like you're rubbing my face in it :|

Sadly it is easier to jump to a better company with better pay than to work your butt off for more work and barely a pay raise.

i've been doing this for the past 4 or so years with some effect, but they're all horizontal moves

As someone who has been told he fits the very bill many times, I'll impart the wisdom that happiness is far more valuable than any pursuit that other people tell you to chase or think you should. Chasing the goals of other people, no matter how capable one might be at it, is a waste of time for all involved, including the individual in question.

Edit: for clarity, I'm only referring to this specific situation, there are plenty of other times where goals of others are applicable and meaningful.

I know maybe three people who are qualified to do their jobs. People are misplaced everywhere in employment and incompetence is as rampant now as it was 30 years ago.
