-Disney characters that do little but re-enact the plot of their movies
-The word "Heart" being dropped every second sentence.
-A plethora of discount Sephiroths.
-Pretty kickass tournaments.
-Learning to spam Cure.
-Kairi doing nothing.
-Anime. SO much anime.

Proud makes it so you just have to finish the game to get the secret post credit scenes. It's doable but tough.

First game is rough gameplay wise, but still pretty good.

Chain of Memories is bad, but the remake is ok. It's where the story starts getting weird.

II is one of my very favorite RPGs ever. Story is nuts though.

Days would be a great game if only it weren't a game.

And after that, the series went to systems I didn't have so I stopped playing. They did later port them but I didn't care anymore at that point.

that is supposed to happen actually. its a lesson to encourage you to get good, or else you literally get your ass kicked straight outta the game. really revolutionary mechanic from square, but they got a lot of criticism and no one ever attempted that again to my knowledge.

Lol, there's a couple random issues with the ports but they're usually stable. KH2 used to have a bug where the game crashed when you tried to save before the save finished, but they fixed that thankfully.

On topic, I'd say expect fun games gameplay wise and a bad story. I'd say stick to "Standard" mode mostly for the first time out. It'll probably err on the "too easy" aside of things, but the games can be pretty punishing on harder difficulties.

I'm just doing the normal mode. If I like it I'll go back and do it on the harder level. Getting the hang of the fighting by sparring. Riku suddenly ain't got shit to say when I beat him. Smug little douche with his force field or whatever the hell that is.

Riku on DI is actually kinda challenging since you don't have roll. Idk if you can even block in the beginning.

Edit: also magic is typically very powerful in this series, so if you're not using it much later on try to get yourself to. Also Ethers >>>> potions in 1 and 2.

I can't block or roll. I can, however, accidentally climb trees when I'm trying to get out of the way and eat an attack. I can also randomly jump attack instead of regular attacking sometimes, usually at the precise moment when over-committing isn't what I want.

Fight Wakka a bunch of times and get extra XP by smacking his ball back at him

You can get a few levels pretty quickly and have a small head start.

Anyway, KH1 is my personal favorite because after that the storyline went full anime. Fun action games but holy fuck the story.

I can't enjoy a game if I hate the characters.

Yeah, once in a while there's some random bs you need to do in order to progress the game in the first one. Usually just running around every area will eventually lead you to the next event, but it's easy to get into "wtf am I actually supposed to do" in some sections.

The sequels pretty much always make goals clear though.

KH2 is a legit fantastic game. The story across the board sucks but in KH2 at some points it at least has rule of cool going for it. It also has the best gameplay apart from maybe KH3

Also, something to know mechanically is that KH1 is a bit different from other games in that you can level past basically any challenge.

However, in later entries they introduce a damage cap for you on bosses, and a damage minimum they deal. This means that at certain stat thresholds, further level ups will affect nothing in the fight except your abilities. This isn't super important to know in the story, but it is good to know for super bosses. Leveling to 100 will cheese almost everything in kh1, but not the later games.

Also shield/ drop sword is a great choice, especially for a first playthrough lol.

That dang race. I can win it 30 times in a row but on every single playthrough, I lose it the only time that matters.

Yeah, positioning and platforming can get a bit wonky at times, and it's the main reason those two things never really get a focus in the series ever again, but it's never too bad imo.

Leon and that big multi-part scrub were a little too easy. I'm beginning to regret choosing the normal difficulty. Now that I can dodge roll, use magic, and have some badass party members I'm pretty sure I'll roll through this game no prob. But I don't want to start again. Hopefully the challenge will ramp up a little once this tutorial stuff gets out of the way.

A little annoyed by these chests I can't seem to reach. This is like 4 now.

Some chests you won't be able to reach yet. You'll eventually learn abilities to be able to reach them.

Does Standard offer the zero exp ability or is that only in Proud? If it's there, you can equip that to help with the difficulty a bit.

KH1 in general has a bit of a reverse difficulty curve. Guard Armor is one of the most annoying bosses on Proud because you don't have roll and he two shots you (unless you're really over leveled). Then you get Cure and Aero and the difficulty drops further.

If it's boring on normal then definitely bump up the difficulty in later games. Know that, with the exception of KH2, critical is just proud but you do half damage.

I'm through Wonderland. That shit about gummi ships went way over my head or something, because I've got no interest whatsoever in it. And this is like Fighting Mooks: The Game. Endless hordes of weaklings, endless button-mashing. That big-ass boss dude at the end of Wonderland took me out twice before I beat him tbh. I'm quite ashamed. More of that (except my size, I'm sick of jumping like an idiot), less of the trash that won't leave me alone please.

Haha yeah, if you want it to not be button mashing you need to up the difficulty. Otherwise 90% of mob encounters are mash X and heal once in a while. This is true of basically every game except maybe CoM.

Trickmaster is one of the easier bosses in the game imo, but it's decent. Bosses in general are the highlight of the series.
