I'm the type of person who could sleep for 10-12 hours if I wanted to.
I can also function well (even for work) on just four hours, so I knew I had to do something to remain efficient with my time.

If I go to bed when I'm just tired, I have to sleep on my side or my stomach to actually fall asleep. But if I'm exhausted, I can fall asleep on my back (which normally is not comfortable enough for me to sleep that way), and that makes it easier to wake up earlier.

So, let's say I'm scheduled for 10:00 AM shift, and I gotta get up at 9:00. I'll stay up (working on whatever) until around 5:00, so that I know I can't oversleep and at the most I'll be getting about four hours.

Once evening rolls around, I'll be exhausted enough from the mere four hours to fall asleep on my back, and start it all over again.

I couldn't do it every day if I wanted to. I've certainly stayed up and underslept before, but i always make that up within a day or two.

lately my body has been waking me up after 5 hours of sleep no matter what time i go to bed. it sucks so fucking bad.
after 5 hours i just feel rested and completely bored laying in bed, trying to fall back asleep. it's the worst.
