note: lots of pretext, context, side stories etc are removed or shortened, if you need me to elaborate on something just ask. some details are left intentionally vague to prevent stalking

my dad grew up poor and became an engineer. he wanted me to do the same, as it was a way to make a steady living off only a bachelors degree

so when i went to college (one of the top ones in the country...the story of how i got in with a 3.0 in high school is a whole different story), i picked engineering even though honestly i had no passion for it or anything

i absolutely sucked at it, with a 2.6 GPA. i had no passion, no commitment, and i just hated life entirely after a lifetime of abuse and hated myself for choosing to abuse myself even further by committing to studying engineering.

i applied for a wide range of internships, but i absolutely blew them all as i had 0 social skills, talking skills or any other skills to go with my lack of engineering skills. however...one of the jobs i applied for called me back with an offer. i absolutely blew the interview (when they asked why i wanted the job i said "money...?") however everyone else that applied was worse or turned down the job. so they had to offer it to me or lose the position entirely. this got my feet into the government agency door.

it was around this time that a lot of funding started getting approved in the wake of hurricane katrina. the government was so woefully under prepared for that, they couldn't let it happen again..and if just for the sake of appearance decided to throw money at the situation. this created thousands of jobs at the government agency i worked.

however, sadly when i graduated the economy took a massive hit due to the housing crisis. unlike my dad it looked like i wouldn't be able to get work with just a bachelors degree. so after 2 years of doing nothing (i applied for jobs but only got like 2 interviews) i applied for grad school in the same emergency management field that got all that funding a few years ago

side note: it was around this time that i became a pick up artist, and the side effects of that were i learned how to talk better, became more confident and that allowed me to focus more on my studies

i got a 3.8 GPA in grad school and again worked as an intern for the same government agency as before...but that housing crisis made it impossible to get a full time job with that government agency

so i'll completely skim over this part as it's not that exciting:
-finished grad school
-worked private industry to get experience
-used that experience to get more certificates in the field

then it became absurd that the government agency that i worked for as an intern didn't have me working for them (they spent years training me) so they made me an absurd offer and i went back. with all the funding this agency received, they had thousands of employees, so each employee barely had to do anything. they were more concerned with being able to say "we have XX% of employees with masters degrees AND PEs!" so that they sounded good to the public and certain elected officials can keep their approval rating and job, as they were "doing a good job preventing another hurricane katrina". so essentially i'm paid an absurd fee just so they can say they have someone with my qualifications on their payroll

now with corona, working full time from home has become the normal...but since i barely have to do anything i can just watch netflix all day. and since we're unionized, i can't get fired as long as i perform the absolute basis of my job...which is barely anything lol

just gotta love it when things randomly work out!

Didn't read any of that, way too long.

Imagine having the creativity to come up with this dumb gimmick and spend all the time posting these stupid things over and over instead of using that creativity and energy for something positive or good for you? You should try to focus your efforts onto something else. It might improve your life.

Lol we have similar backgrounds. My parents were immigrants and had no money. No engineering degrees but they pushed it hard on me because they wanted one kid to be an engineer and I was awesome at math.

Only I HATED it. I wanted to drop out second semester but my mom started flipping out on me. She would scream and go What do you want to be then, a maid?? Because I guess that was all there is to her.

So I often just pretended to go to school but really was at the mall. Finished with a 2.56 GPA. Managed to get a job anyway that paid me $50k out of school but eventually just went into tech sales and I loved it. No grad school but I do want to get my MBA so I can climb to Director/VP level

Yes my parents were also immigrants, I hated that they pushed their idea of the "American dream" onto me when I don't care for kids or having a house.

Where did your parents immigrate from?

Yeah most of my friends also had immigrant parents that pushed them hard. But then we did all end up successful so its not all bad.

My parents immigrated from Egypt. There is a joke among Egyptians that every parent wants at least one kid to be an Engineer, a Pharmacist or a Doctor. Among my aunts and uncles, at least one kid is one of the above. My brother flunked out of school and my sister is artsy, so I was chosen as tribute. Worst years of my life, I hated it so much and didnt really think I could actually enjoy working somewhere until I changed fields.

yeah i just love it when things work out (since we know enough things don't in life), but i've learned to view it more as being open to/prepared for the opportunity
