I have very limited knowledge in biology or medicine so I'm probably just missing something important here.
As I understand it, a vaccine is like a small sample of the target virus that you introduce so your body learns how to fight it before being overrun. If that's the case, I'm confused on why a Covid19 vaccine is taking so long to develop. I'm sure they're tirelessly working around the clock, I just don't know on what. --- 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 ... Also you have to test it and test it in large population groups to make sure what you've put together doesn't have any unforeseen negative effects on the body. It's a long process.

your immune system can be roughly broken into two parts, the innate and the adaptive.
innate immune response is seen when you cut yourself, area gets red, swelling starts, clotting starts. these are aspects that happen every time because of signaling chemicals release when damage is incurred, and its a very rapid response. the adaptive response is slower. it involves specific types of white cells that go to the site of damage and take in bits and pieces of invasive material they find. over time that material initiates a response that produces unique types of signaling chemicals called antibodies to be produced that are 'shaped' specifically to bind to bits of that invading material so the immune system can more effectively remove it. vaccines work to stimulate this adaptive response before you catch and become sick from the virus/bacteria/parasite/whatever. traditional vacines are made up of bit and pieces of the disease particle or a weakened (attenuated/non infectious) form of it, they are designed to activate the immune response and set up the system to produce those antibodies that would massively help fight off the disease if you are actually exposed. these traditional vaccines are slow to produce though, because there isn't some cookie cutter method to do it. for example think of the flu vaccine, it took years for them to come up with a method to produce it, and it takes literally millions of chicken eggs each year to produce a new updated version each year. so the hope is that an alternative form of vaccine, called an RNA vaccine, can be used. RNA vaccines skip over the process of developing a method to produce weakened disease particles and instead take bits of the disease's genetic material to directly produce a very specific antigen (the binding site for antibodies). its hoped that the RNA, once injected into the host, will initiate the production of these antigens and that they can stimulate an immune response strong enough to produce antibodies that would persist and act as a defense for the actual disease. this type of vaccine is much quicker to produce, there are already versions being tested in people. but its a new process, never before successfully used in humans, and it carries a lot of risks. --- Taarsidath-an halsaam. you have to make it, ensure it's strong enough to create the antibodies but weak enough to not make you sick, doesn't have other unintended consequences over a period of time, then mass produce and distribute it after it's been deemed safe enough.

It actually sounds like a vaccine is very possible this time around. I know recent history hasn't been kind to us finding vaccines for these outbreaks, but this one actually has a lot of people optimistic. Not only that, we could get one in record time which is mind blowing. We could have one so fast that honestly, it may make me look into some conspiracy theories, that's how soon we could expect one. The wet dream scenario was 18 months for a vaccine, but it genuinely sounds like one could be available next Spring. Some even say by the end of the year, but that may be asking WAY too much. But if we get one in around a year, it would make me start asking questions, and I'm not usually that kind of person.
It may end up being like the flu vaccine where it doesn't eradicate it, but I don't think some people don't really understand what not having a true vaccine really means. Even if we can't kill it for good, being able to control it a little like the flu is a world of difference, especially once we have anti-viral treatments. --- All we are is Dustin The Wind https://imgur.com/wPAK66m ...
