For one, youre not going to unsling a rifle and ready it before someone can knife you or produce a handgun. Secondly, it makes you stand out as a target for potential shooters. Criminals like soft targets. If it was a mass shooter who came there specifically to kill, then yeah, he'd take out that guy first.
