Dresden Files is a series Ive always heard about but never ventured into. I kind of want to check them out.

The first 3 books are a little rough but by 5 it's fantastic.

Oh man. I haven't read a Dresden Files book in forever. I think the last book I read was Changes. How many books has it been since then?? Might want to give the series a reread.

I recommend everything by Butcher.

Codex Alera is 6 books long and finished.

Butcher wrote it basically on a dare.

Someone on his forum was saying an author can't make a good story based on a bad idea.

He essentially said "fuck you give me two bad ideas."

He got "The Lost Roman Legion" and "Pokemon."

Then there's The Cinder Spires, one book so far. Very Steampunk.

Oh you should definitely reread as long as you read at a decent pace. Especially if you don't remember how Changes ended.

I'd just read a summary of the first two. Then jump to the third.

huh, like 3 years since the last main line book. good to hear.

if anyone wants suggestions for other books, i'd point out that butcher has other books. cinder spire is ok, but i really enjoyed codex alera.

beyond that, iron druid is an interesting series. similar to dresden files though maybe not as well written. involves druids/irish gods/vampires/werewolves/witches/magical jews...

alex veras is another series, about a main character with the ability of future sight.

I have enjoyed all of butcher's books, but I felt spire was a little weak.

Iron Druid starts out as a lot of fun, and stays that way for a good while. I felt it went down hill when he started trying to split the story to multiple viewpoints.

I read stuff like this as pulp fun books. Butcher can manage to get feels in, but when Hearne tries to make his works more serious I feel he loses what charm and appeal he had and doesn't manage to gain much.

If you want pure stupid first person action/modern fantasy Richard Kadrey does it in his books, but the quality is lower then the two already mentioned.

3 years? Try 6. I think there have been short stories but Skin Game was out in 2014.

It's good to see the return of this series.
