Once you realize the design and lore of the fight, its just so fucking good. DS > DS3, but Soul of Cinder is literal perfection.

I prefer OG Gwyn's fight, imo.

3 was just too full of 'Hey, Player! Remember THIS from Dark Souls 1? Yeah, we screwed up with 2, so we ain't even gonna reference that shit in this game, so here's more copy-pasted stuff from 1 without any thoughtful explanations.' moments.

If 3 had more semblance of its own identity, then it would've been the game of that generation, but that title is reserved to Bloodborne.

The balance of the different forms in his first phase was kind of inconsistent. The sorcerer form is a joke and the scimitar form is basically just a waiting game until he changes to something else you can actually attack.

Heh, i kinda agree, but i like Ds3 way more than Bloodborne for the PvP and other reasons. When i saw Anor Londo again i thought 'whatever'. Its a decent area and ive killed many players there but unique locations like the Irithyll Dungeon were better. For a playthrough, Bloodborne was really good. I beat it twice but never grinded the Chalices because i hate farming.

I agree. 3 has some really amazing things. The Twin Princes Bose fight is absolutely amazing and both DLCs are incredible, but it definitely panders way too much to Dark Souls 1.

I disagree that Dark Souls 3 panders too much to the Dark Souls fans, or whatever people say; it's a sequel, and it gets unfairly criticized for being one.

it might take some locations, gameplay mechanics, aesthetics, etc. from its predecessors, but it definitely builds on those elements.

It's hilarious considering

1. How much Dark Souls ripped off from Demons Souls.

2. Ornstein flat out returns as as boss in DS2 and no one cared

It's just a hipster thing

"Oh now the series is popular the characters totally sold out by having minor lore friendly references in the background if you look out for them!"

His armor set straight up says he left the cathedral to find the nameless king.We couldn't have killed him in DS1 for that to be true.

Smough's set also says he was the last one left to defend the cathedral

In reality, DS doesn't always add up, but it is fun for many to theorize what exactly things mean.

Getting someone's soul doesn't mean much. Gwyn gave parts of his soul to multiple people without dying.

Its mostly that instead of being a proper sequel it mostly does its own thing but then goes HAY LOOK DARK SOULS 1!!!! And also completely ignores Dark Souls 2 almost entirely. There is also a lot of cut content and dead ends in lore that hint to a better game set entirely in Lothric.

By that logic you could say Demon's Souls ALSO ripped off King's Field series as well as Shadow Tower.

However with Dark Souls, they had to, due to Sony owning the rights to the Demon's Souls brand. Dark Souls was developed with being distributed across multiple consoles in mind, so its served as a spiritual successor and thus payed homage to it.

2. Ornstein flat out returns as as boss in DS2 and no one cared

You weren't around when a lot fans were disappointed with the appearance of "Not Ornstein' during release week. That's certainly more than 'no one'.

It's just a hipster thing

"Oh now the series is popular the characters totally sold out by having minor lore friendly references in the background if you look out for them!"

The problem with 2 was that it was too vague in its descriptions, creating new and unneeded inconsistencies and stamped that shit as 'LORE', whereas in 3 it was too blatant with the throwbacks and diluted its own identity in the process.

It's just hipster drivel.

"A cute sublte background reference means you diluted your own identity!" is just like when conservatives say "Gays don't deserve equal rights because it devalues the fabric and cohesion of our society."

Honeyed rhetoric but you're not actually saying a damn thing. Just trying to feel superior.
