There's actually...nothing to do on other people's islands. Literally nothing. You can collect fish and fruit and wood. That's it. And when someone is on your island, you can do nothing on your own island. All the important tasks become inaccessible. The only activity is to show people your shit. Literally just run around and play the ocarina.

And then there's the actual process of connecting to a friend. I don't even want to go into it, it's painful to talk about. I hope you like confirming 5 times instead of once though. Imagine if every day life was like this. Do you like apples? Are you sure you like apples? Would you like an apple? I have an apple, would you like this one? Ok, I'm giving it to you, hope you're ok with that? Ok, good. Just gonna give you the apple now. Transferring the apple from my hand to your hand. There you go, there's the apple.

The solution: don't visit people's islands. Don't let people visit your island. Don't bother trying to add your friends to your best friends list. None of it is worth it.

well my only gripe is having to access other islands through codes.

i was expecting a lobby where you could choose islands that are available to access publicly while others could be acessed privately through a friend invite or whatever. you know, like most games do...

The rage I feel when I go through all the screens to go to another island and then accidentally hit 'Friends' instead of 'Dodo Code.'

But yeah, the main draw of going to someone else's island is for inspiration or to see their shops/special visitors. Unless they're in the opposite hemisphere or a different month due to time traveling, fishing/bug catching isn't really any more lucrative than just doing it on your own island.

Can you use the timer online? I bought it but haven't used it in multiplayer yet. Could make for some fun competitions.

Other than that, online in these games has been like this for a while. Not an excuse, just it is what it is. Usually the fun is made between friends and their imaginations more so than any game mechanics.

They really should have made it worthwhile for users to help each other. Like make collaboration a way to be able to improve your island more quickly.

Instead they built this system where it's really just a nuisance to have anyone over. It's cute for 3 minutes and then you just want them to leave so you can get back to doing your work.

They should add communal islands where you and all your best friends can visit and edit it freely. You can only access it if you're online, but any of you can make changes there regardless of whether the host or any guests are there or not.

The issue of long, drawn out text boxes and cutscenes, which are honestly a hallmark of the series, is taken way too far with online play. It honestly makes me not want to play online at all. They need to just make it so you are always-online if connected to the internet, so you can see whose gates are open and can open yours or travel with less hassle. It wouldve been a great start at least. This is a console game, its not really a stretch to assume many people will play this with an internet connection nearby.
